LOTL Book Project: Volunteer Recruitment

The idea for Letters of the Law was born during one very long shower back in 2016. We launched the website not too long after, on the 3rd of October in 2016, publishing Letters from a corporate lawyer, a litigation lawyer, a law student and law professor. Since then, we’ve also hosted a chat with Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon and collaborated with Broc & Bells on a dinner conversation about well-being.

The rhythm of Letters of the Law has ebbed and flowed with the rhythm of our lives. While we remain dedicated to this cause, everyone in the team has graduated from law school and transitioned into #adulting. We’ve gone from posting a Letter a week to posting Letters on a more ad-hoc basis.

51 letters and 6 interviews later, we are taking the next step. We’ve toyed with the idea of compiling our content into a book for a while now, and we’d like to turn this into reality. The idea is to compile fresh Letters, as well as old favourites from our website, into a printed publication.

We’ve always said that Letters of the Law is for the tired, empty runners, the ones who just need a mid-race respite, and every shade in between. Just imagine how amazing it would be if you could have those stories of hope in hardship with you - physically! A book on your table for those long, dark nights, providing messages of hope and courage in the midst of challenges and fears. Pages you can turn and smooth with your fingers without looking for better reception. Something you can highlight and underline for the next time you need to reach for it, or something you can pass on to someone whom you know, deep down, needs it more than you do.

We’re grateful to you, our readers, for journeying with us thus far. And now, we would like to invite you to join us in the LOTL Book Project.

Responsibilities of Book Project volunteers include:

  • Conceptualise and contribute to the editorial direction of the book

  • Source for and liaise with publishers

  • Generate fresh content (this may include reaching out to contributors, conducting interviews and/or copywriting)

  • Coordinate the design of the book

We’re looking for people who are passionate about building community and able to commit their time in the next one year (September 2019 to August 2020) to bringing this publication to fruition. Undergraduates are welcome to apply; experience in editing, publishing and/or design is a bonus.

If you are excited about the work that we do and are keen to explore how you can contribute to the LOTL Book Project, submit your application here and we will reach out to set up a chat. The application deadline is 31 July 2019. We will be considering applications on a rolling basis.

Questions? Drop us an email at lettersofthelaw@gmail.com and we will get back to you at the earliest opportunity.
